Hidden Gun Bill Veto Override Up on Tuesday

The proponents of having hidden guns in our malls, movie theaters and other public places are hoping the State Assembly will override Governor Doyle’s veto of their bill on Tuesday. (Though at times, I could see an exception for people who don’t turn their cell phones off during movies.)

The bill, which comes up every session without success, would make Wisconsin join the other 46 states that currently have this law in some form in their statutes. Ironically, the states without the law have the highest gun safety rates per capita in the nation. That includes, of course, Wisconsin. And that's not lefty spin. That came from the NRA lobbyist!

Need a reason to oppose the idea? Just look at the Virginia legislator who, after taking the required safety course, still found an opportunity to blow a hole in his office door with his hidden gun.

Hidden gun advocates continue their push, despite the fact that seventy percent of the people in Wisconsin oppose the law. Observers say that the bill is more about creating a wedge issue in certain parts of the state (northern Wisconsin for example) to ensure GOP victories, rather than about the merits of the bill (which are hard to find).

I know I’ll get comments from gun lovers. Trust me. I get them now.

For the record, I do not want to pry your gun from your cold dead hand. And I understand everyone has a right to live the bumper sticker, “My wife yes, my dog maybe, my gun never”.
Seriously, no one is going to take away your guns in Wisconsin. Take a deep breath.

My prediction? No override, no bad law.

The Virginia legislator would have failed the classes here to get a CCW. Basic handgun skills would have prevented the accedental discharge in this case....

I hope it does get overridden just so you are wrong...

Tom,

The point is, even the most well trained, well intentioned gun handler can have an accident.

I know several well trained (read Ex-military, and hunters saftey course) people that have had their guns accidentally discharge. Luckily, in couple of incidents that I have witnessed, no one was hurt.

The more guns that are in circulation, and especially if they are now handled/carried/concealed on a daily basis, the more gun accidents you are going to have.

Nevermind the fist fights that might turn into gun fights, if you have 1000, 5000, 10000 more people per day using guns, you are going to have a few more mishaps...

The biggest flaw regarding the law, is the fact that you will have to both post a sign and verbally notify anyone that enters your house or business, that concealed weapons are not allowed.

That is correct. If you don't want guns in your home, make sure that sign on or next to your front entrance is clearly visible, and be sure to tell each visitor face to face that guns are not allowed in your home.

Otherwise, they can legally be packing without your knowledge when they come over for little Billy's birthday party.

In all of the classes I have taken this is the line that is always taught:

"Accidents do not just happen. Accidents are the result of violating the rules of safe gun handling and common sense."

In the article you read it was clear he wasn't holding the gun correctly.

Nevermind the fist fights that might turn into gun fights

What states that have CCW already have this problem? In reality it never happens. The guys getting the CCW are not the ones who get into fights...

Here is something else you may find that doesn't backup your statements (from Ohio a Shall issue state):

Shooting accidents at home a record low

Why is it that Dems always call issues that they disagree with, "wedge issues?" First off, in order for it to be a successful wedge issue for the GOP, wouldn't it need to enjoy the support of a majority of voters? Otherwise, they would be on the losing side of the electorate and all of their members can start looking for new jobs. So, I guess you can say that the GOP is trying to create a wedge issue to win elections, or that a majority of Wisconsinites opposes this legislation, but you can't have it both ways.

Well, anonymous (if that is your real name)...in some districts particularly in Northern Wisconsin, this is a issue supported by a stronger constituency. Statewide, it bombs at 30% approval. However, the GOP is strategically targeting certain legislative races to win as well as use it to raise campaign cash. Yuck.

TomInWestBend,

It doesn't matter how low the accident level rates go, the more guns that are being handled, the more accidents will happen.

If the rate is .01% * 10000 people that will be 100 accidents/year.

If you now have 20000 people, the rate is going to be similar, you shoud expect there to be twice as many accidents.

So, anyone who has taken the training course, has never had an accident, or lost their temper, or developed mental health issues after taking the training class?

Accidents happen, are you going to take my scissors away because I could stab someone with them? Are you going to take my car away? It goes on. You are pulling at straws if you follow these simple rules that you are taught in class most accidents that happen would be avoided:

RULE 1: All guns are always loaded.

RULE 2: Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.

RULE 3: Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.

And teach kids these rules:

1. If you see a gun, never touch it.

2. Leave immediately.

3. Tell an adult.

They have done studies on the above rules with children, and they work. Most of the children who have the above rules ingrained into thier heads do follow them, the ones who don't are the curious ones who will get hurt. Please teach your kids the above rules!

I don't have access to the website with the stats but I will try and get them when I am at home if you need to see them

Well, at least this is settled for one more year until the NRA lobbyist write another bill for Gunderson to push.

Whatever happened with "Gundy's" lawsuit that we (taxpayers) are paying for? The one where he wouldn't share his draft of the bill, even though he had shared it with the NRA and now it was considered public record. Mark, any updates on that?
